Purchased a Compaq computer, printer and monitor from Sears (first mistake) in August of 2001. It was a gift from my husband for caring for him after his near fatal heart attack and triple bypass surgery in June. I sent in the registration info within a week after purchase, and started the time
consuming job of transferring things from old to new system. During this process, I noticed that there were already Internet cookies on it, which I thought at the time was odd. I called Compaq and they said they had no record of it having been registered before. I wasn't real comfortable with that answer, and obviously should have pursued it, but I wasn't quite myself after all those months of caring for a grumpy husband! I just needed to get a computer up and running again!

March 2, 2002 my printer suddenly quit in the middle of a print job. I called Compaq. This is where the nightmare begins. They took my name, etc. then told me my warranty had run out in November 2001! I told them I had a one year warranty, and I had just bought it in August. No go. They wanted me to send them PROOF! A few days later, I faxed them the receipt from work. When I called to be sure they had received it, they hadn't. Apparently one of the many techs I talked to had given me the wrong number. That was the Canada number. I refaxed it. I called again to see if it had gotten there, and they said no, I had used the wrong number. They gave me another number to call!!

When I got home from work that day there was e-mail saying that "the issue" had been resolved, and gave me a case number should I need to contact them again. I called a few days later just to see if all was in order and guess what? My warranty had expired in November 2001!! And the case number I was given didn't exist either! Several techs and many hours later, they decided I should E-MAIL my receipt to them. I called to see if they had gotten it. Ooops...yes, but, it was in a format they couldn't read. Could I resend it? I resent it. Finally, supposedly, my warranty was good (like it should have been all along!) A tech called me to "troubleshoot" the problem. I'd been through hours of troubleshooting already with Sears (yeah, well....)

I refused to uninstall and reinstall the printer. What they finally came up with was that I needed new ink cartridges..they should be changed every three months ????!!!!!!!!or so. And no..that little cartridge icon in the printer box doesn't really mean anything. Since I can't see through these, like I could with my Canon cartridges, I have no way of knowing. Sears techs had no idea what to do either...had me uninstall and reinstall the printer several times, and when it still didn't work they sent me a new one...but not new...reconditioned! As for the 3 year In Home Service contract we purchased with the computer for $189, apparently that's useless too. They had to troubleshoot first, which they did for hours on end before they gave up and told me they'd send me the different one. Not once did anyone offer to come out and service it IN MY HOME!!!!!!

In total frustration, my computer phobic husband suggested reinstalling it a different way. He remembered helping me set it up originally.I'm totally disgusted with Compaq and Sears. After weeks of nothing but the run around, I've given up. They win. I can't devote any more of my time and sanity to this mess. And Compaq's explanation for the warranty snafu? They expect the product to be sold within 3 months after they ship it out. ????????What does that have to do with anything?! I thought warranties started from date of purchase!! I'm going to use this piece of junk till it dies, then I'm getting out of the home computer racket! Who needs the aggravation?!!
