Subject: HIMEM Sys Problem

My son had CompUSA add 16 MB memory to his computer.  Nothing but problems thereafter with strange aborts.  My son had me look at his computer and I found that the memory test in the config.sys was off.  I merely turned it on. When we booted the computer displayed the message that HIMEM Sys had detected
unreliable memory giving the address and directions where one could find information about HIMEM.  Clearly rational individuals would be led to believe that there was a memory problem.  A software module was telling us.  We had recently had memory installed.  Took the machine back to technical services.
They wouldn't even listen.  One of their techies wanted to know if I had changed anything.  I said yes a had memory test turned on.  He responded "see you have changed something."  He walked away.  The other techie told me that it was a software problem and then proceeded to tell me that they would check out the machine and if it was not their problem that they would charge me.  I emphasized that I merely wanted to have the memory, under warranty, checked out.  After all, a software module was warning us that we had unreliable
memory.  The Techie simply repeated, like a broken record, that I would have to pay them if they determined that it was not their problem.  I finally asked for a manager.  He repeated what his techies had recited but he did take the machine for testing. A no point were they interested in providing service or listening to me.  Their only goal was to try to intimidate me with "if we determine that it is not our problem you will have to pay for the technician's time."  I was amazed how they all avoided eye contact and were extremely defensive. Incidentally, throughout this no other customers were waiting.  I was the only on there.  In fact, a clerk working near by had to find the man who was working at the counter when I first arrived.
